US White House: 'Evidence of Chinese AI Tech Theft Secured'
US White House Accuses China of AI Tech Theft
The Donald Trump administration accused several Chinese companies of stealing American artificial intelligence (AI) technology on the 23rd (local time). Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), stated on 'X' that the US has secured evidence of a large-scale 'distillation' campaign by China to steal American AI, and that the US will take action to protect its innovation.
AI Companies Share Information and Respond
Previously, reports indicated that major US AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google were jointly responding to China's 'imitation' of advanced AI models. According to Bloomberg, these three companies, through the 'Frontier Model Forum' non-profit established with Microsoft (MS) in 2023, have been sharing information regarding China's AI technology theft. This information pertains to 'hostile distillation' by Chinese companies, similar to the 'large-scale distillation campaign' mentioned by Director Kratsios. AI distillation refers to a method of creating smaller models with similar functionalities using knowledge from larger models.
