SPLC Accused of Fraudulent Payments to Extremist Groups
SPLC Faces Accusations of Donor Fraud
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is embroiled in legal controversy, accused of defrauding donors by allegedly funnelling money to extremist groups. According to Fox News's chief legal correspondent Shannon Bream, while SPLC claims to fight racism and extremist organizations, a Department of Justice (DOJ) indictment alleges that SPLC lied to banks and falsified information to open accounts for making payments. Jonathan Fahey, a former federal prosecutor and acting ICE director, stated that the SPLC has been engaged in such practices for years.
Charlottesville Incident and Fundraising
Jonathan Fahey highlighted the 2017 Charlottesville incident as a significant example of SPLC's questionable practices. Following this event, the SPLC reportedly paid $270,000 to one of the Charlottesville rally organizers. Subsequently, the organization raised over $81 million, leveraging the controversy. Fahey criticized the SPLC for acting like a law enforcement agency by using informants and argued that their actions serve to create racial division and for partisan purposes, despite their non-partisan designation. The SPLC's website lists its focus areas as 'Strengthening Democracy & Voting Rights,' 'Dismantling White Supremacy,' 'Ending Unjust Imprisonment,' and 'Eliminating Poverty and Economic Inequality.'
Stolen Drones and National Security Concerns
Fahey also discussed the recent theft of 15 large crop-spraying drones in New Jersey. The FBI is reportedly concerned that these drones could be used in biological or chemical weapons attacks. The sophisticated theft involved fake bills of lading and email accounts for drones valued at approximately $60,000, capable of carrying up to 40 gallons of chemicals. Fahey emphasized the paramount importance of national security and public safety, urging a focus on these issues over partisan politics, especially given potential threats from actors like Iran and the current DHS funding situation.
