Chinese Investors Transform Borneo Jungle into Indonesia's New Capital
Nusantara: Indonesia's New Beginning
Indonesia plans to relocate its capital from the current Jakarta to Nusantara (Ibu Kota Nusantara, IKN) starting in 2028. Jakarta faces severe traffic congestion, significant air pollution, and the risk of flooding due to rising sea levels, necessitating the construction of a new capital. Nusantara is being built in the jungle region of Borneo, and Chinese investors are reportedly participating in this large-scale project.
New City Construction Progress in the Jungle
After driving through the Borneo jungle for over an hour, a rental van from Balikpapan city airport navigates a partially washed-out bridge. Roadside signs warn against poaching endangered sun bears. By the third hour, the journey concludes at Nusantara, Indonesia's new capital, which is set to begin its role as the capital from 2028.
