China Strengthens Environmental Legislation for a 'Beautiful China'
China's Efforts in Environmental Protection and Legislation
China is strongly implementing its commitment to environmental conservation across all natural environments, including mountains, rivers, and grasslands. This has led to the approval of landmark legislation and the adoption of a sweeping environmental code. Notably, the Futian National Nature Reserve in Shenzhen demonstrates that cities and nature can coexist harmoniously, with a significant increase in biodiversity compared to the past. Mangrove forests play a crucial role in carbon storage, contributing to climate change mitigation and providing habitats for wildlife.
Ecological Restoration Projects and Achievements
In Shenzhen, the Kunpeng Trail No. 1 Bridge, built to support the city's economic growth, was designed as an ecological corridor for animals. Initially, there were doubts about whether animals would use the bridge, but cameras captured leopard cats and hundreds of other animals utilizing it, proving that development and nature can coexist harmoniously. Furthermore, in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, a barren desert from 20 years ago has been transformed into a forest with three million trees, significantly reducing sandstorms and improving the environment. This was achieved through charitable donations and technical support from biologists and engineers.
China's Environmental Vision for the Future
China is moving away from the past approach of "pollute first, clean up later" and is striving to achieve its goal of a "Beautiful China." Lyu Zhongmei, Vice Chair of the NPC Environment and Resources Protection Committee, emphasized the importance of blue skies, white clouds, green mountains, and clear water for people to experience the beauty of nature. Huang Runqiu, Minister of Ecology and Environment, stated that the enactment of the Ecological and Environmental Code aligns with China's goal of reaching peak carbon emissions, and the nation will pursue green and low-carbon transformation and reduce pollution at the source to achieve sustainable development. The international community is also taking notice of China's proactive role in international climate diplomacy.
