Navotas Landfill Fire Smoke Forces Obando, Bulacan Residents to Evacuate
Toxic Smoke Spreads from Navotas Landfill Fire
A fire erupted at a closed sanitary landfill in Navotas, Philippines, on April 10. The hazardous smoke from this fire was carried by the wind to nearby areas, significantly affecting Purok Tres, Barangay Salambao in Obando, Bulacan. Local resident Aling Candelaria Velasco described the situation, stating that she could barely breathe due to the thick and foul-smelling smoke. Her family also experienced respiratory distress, with her 8-year-old grandson suffering an asthma attack.
Resident Evacuation and Relief Efforts
In response to the smoke, a total of 115 families from the Obando area were evacuated to the Obando National High School. Velasco noted that while they are accustomed to evacuating during typhoons or high tides, this situation was unprecedented. The Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office of Obando is ensuring that evacuees receive necessary supplies and support, prioritizing their health and safety. This incident was reported by Bernadette Sembrano on the program 'Tao Po' on April 25, 2026.
