Australian Independent MP Proposes 25% Gas Export Tax
Proposal for Gas Export Tax
Independent MP Allegra Spender has proposed a 25% tax on gas exports, asserting that it would rectify what she considers 'faulty' taxation arrangements. She argues that these arrangements allow an Australian resource to be sold overseas with minimal benefit to the country. Spender highlighted that the gas industry is highly profitable and should contribute a fair share to the nation, emphasizing that Australians rightly believe they should share more of the revenue from their non-renewable resources.
Energy Exporter's Role and Fair Return
Spender stated that Australia is fortunate to be an energy exporter when the world needs energy, but it is reasonable for Australians to receive a 'fair return' on that. She believes this is not currently happening. She also touched on the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) reform, noting that states cannot offer the same level of services as the NDIS, and thus, the federal government must be transparent with the public regarding any changes.
