Discrepancies in Footage Raise Questions

BBC Verify analyzed the direction of shadows on the ships and tracking data, revealing inconsistencies. Notably, the hatch through which the men climbed was already open upon their arrival, and another individual appeared to be on board, ready to film their ascent. Greek authorities have denied the seizure of the Epaminondas, stating that the captain remains in control. However, both ships have ceased sharing their location data, making it difficult to ascertain their current status.

Mysterious Boat Trails in Strait Explained

Separately, satellite images circulated online showing a large fleet of small boats in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to claims that Iran was planting sea mines. Experts, however, informed BBC Verify that they have observed similar patterns from Copernicus Sentinel in 2024 and 2025. They suggest these trails could simply be from Iranian fishing boats or smugglers crossing the strait from Oman, refuting the mine-laying allegations.
