US Study: Excessive AI Reliance May Harm Cognitive Ability
AI Reliance Linked to Cognitive Decline and Reduced Independent Performance
A recent US study indicates that excessive reliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools may negatively impact users' cognitive abilities and independent performance. The research team conducted two experiments involving 350 and 670 participants, respectively, finding that just 10 minutes of using an AI assistant like ChatGPT can lead to dependency. When AI assistance was removed, performance sharply declined, and participants experienced burnout.
Performance and Persistence Decrease After AI Assistance Halts
The study, titled 'AI assistance reduces persistence and hurts independent performance,' was published on the ArXiv platform. In the first experiment with 350 American participants, half received help from an OpenAI GPT-5 based chatbot, while the other half worked independently. When AI access was cut midway through the experiment, the AI group's accuracy plummeted, and some participants chose to abandon the test. A second experiment with 670 participants yielded similar conclusions, confirming a decrease in both performance and persistence in the AI group. This suggests that while AI assistance can enhance immediate performance, it may come with significant cognitive costs in the long run.
