Hong Kong's Baby Bonus Scheme Falters Amidst Declining Birth Rates
Hong Kong's baby bonus scheme, offering HK$60,000 for families with three children, has disbursed less than 60% of its budget, while the city's birth rate dropped by 20% compared to last year.
Hong Kong Baby Bonus Disbursement
Twenty Hong Kong couples have each received HK$60,000 (US$7,700) in baby bonuses for having three children in approximately 2½ years. However, less than 60% of the HK$2.28 billion earmarked for the three-year government scheme had been disbursed as of February, with just over six months remaining until its conclusion in October.
Declining Birth Rate Despite Incentives
Government figures indicate a significant decline in Hong Kong's birth rate. The city's registered birth rate in the first two months of this year dropped by 20% compared with the same period in 2025. This suggests that despite the financial incentives, the government's efforts to boost the birth rate are struggling to achieve the desired impact.
