Three individuals in California have been sentenced for insurance fraud in a bizarre scam. The scheme involved someone dressed in a bear costume damaging luxury cars to stage fake incidents. The California Insurance Department reported that in 2024, the group used a person in a bear suit to fake attacks inside a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes vehicles.
'Operation Bear Claw' Leads to Convictions
Following these staged incidents, the fraudsters submitted fraudulent claims seeking nearly US$142,000 in payouts from insurance companies. The department dubbed the investigation "Operation Bear Claw." Two men and a woman from the Los Angeles area pleaded guilty to their involvement in the elaborate scam.
