Shanghai Hotels Reduce Faecal Bacteria Presence to Less Than 1%
Shanghai hotels, despite their luxury, have faced hygiene issues. Efforts have been highlighted to reduce faecal bacteria contamination to less than 1%, with studies showing high bacterial levels on switches and remote controls.
Hotel Room Hygiene Concerns Emerge
Hotel rooms' 'luxury' does not necessarily equate to 'clean and hygienic'. Numerous studies have indicated that light switches and television remote controls are among the objects with the highest levels of bacterial contamination. Furthermore, high levels of microbial organisms have also been found in toilets and bathroom sinks.
Severity of Faecal Bacteria Contamination and Management Needs
Notably, a 2012 survey in the United States remains a crucial reference for the travel industry, even 14 years later. This study found that 81 percent of US hotel samples tested positive for surface faecal bacteria. This suggests that hygiene management in hotel rooms faces significant challenges, not just in appearance but also in actual bacterial contamination levels.
