Murder on a Cruise Ship
Four months ago, the body of 18-year-old Anna Kepner was discovered under a bed on a cruise ship, wrapped in a blanket and covered in life vests. The US Department of Justice alleges that her 16-year-old stepbrother sexually assaulted and intentionally killed Kepner while on a family vacation.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
The Miami-Dade medical examiner's office determined that Kepner died of mechanical asphyxia. Prosecutors have charged the stepbrother with first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse, according to an indictment filed in the Southern District of Florida Federal court. He has pleaded not guilty and is currently out on bond, on the condition that he stays with his uncle in Florida and submits to location monitoring. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
Victim's Life and Family's Statement
Kepner was a cheerleader who was expected to graduate from high school in Florida in May and wanted to join the military, according to her family. Her grandparents, who were also on the cruise, told ABC News that the relationship between Kepner and her stepsiblings was a happy one, adding there was "no such thing as steps."
