HSBC Hong Kong Secures Stablecoin Issuer License, Eyeing H2 Launch
New Era for Hong Kong's Digital Finance
HSBC Holdings, in conjunction with a Standard Chartered-led joint venture, has secured a stablecoin issuer license from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, marking a significant milestone in Hong Kong's digital finance development. This achievement is seen as laying the groundwork for the introduction of stablecoins within the city.
PayMe Users to Potentially Use Stablecoins
With this license, Hong Kong's 3.3 million PayMe users may soon be able to use stablecoins for daily transactions, such as buying coffee or splitting bills, starting from the second half of this year. HSBC is preparing to introduce the digital currency in H2, which is expected to enhance the utilization of digital assets among Hong Kong citizens.
