Netanyahu Gained Nothing from Iran War, Says Former Interim Israeli President
Netanyahu's Failed Strategy to Prolong War
Former acting Israeli President Avraham Burg, in an interview with RT's 'Going Underground,' highlighted the divergent timelines and motivations between the US and Israel regarding the conflict with Iran. According to Burg, US President Donald Trump aimed to conclude the conflict swiftly to avoid impact on the US midterm elections. In contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought to prolong the 'state of war' leading up to the legislative elections in late October, anticipating that Israelis typically rally around the government during wartime.
Political Outcome of War and Iran's Victory
However, Burg asserted that Netanyahu's gamble backfired. He stated, "As for now, Netanyahu did not profit a thing politically from this campaign – he may have lost a lot," predicting that upcoming elections would show Israelis are fed up with Netanyahu's manipulations. Burg also argued that Iran was not an "existential threat" to Israel and that the issue could have been resolved through diplomacy. Describing Trump's unilateral ceasefire as a "divorce" from Israel, Burg concluded that the only clear winner from the conflict was Iran, which "got hit very strong but survived, and therefore it won."
