Taiwan's Qingshui Cliff: 250 Million Years of Geological History and Coastal Highway
Geological Origin of Qingshui Cliff
Qingshui Cliff on Taiwan's eastern coast has stood for eons, long before dolphins evolved. This majestic cliff took shape from crustal movements approximately 250 million years ago, emerging from beneath the sea to tower up at a 90-degree angle to the Pacific Ocean. This natural wonder, sculpted by millions of years of geological forces, continues to withstand the erosion of the waves, showcasing its grandeur today.
Evolution of the Coastal Highway
Initially, Qingshui Cliff was an impassable terrain. However, 140 years ago, local officials initiated a project to carve a road out of the cliff face. Over time, sections of this coastal highway were built, renovated, rebuilt, and even renamed. Today, this road is recognized as the most spectacular highway in Taiwan, offering unforgettable views along its winding path above the dramatic coastal landscape to many visitors.
