Sam Altman Warns 'Superintelligent AI' Infiltrating Economy, Urges US Preparedness
Superintelligent AI's Economic Infiltration and Risks
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated that superintelligent artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a theoretical concept but is rapidly infiltrating all aspects of economic activity. In an interview with Axios on December 6 (local time), he warned that AI could revolutionize productivity while simultaneously increasing risks in cybersecurity and biology, urging proactive measures from U.S. policymakers. Altman explained that AI is already performing coding and research tasks previously handled by multiple developers, and he anticipates future models will expand to support scientific discoveries and enable individuals to perform team-level work.
Increased Cybersecurity and Biological Threats
Altman identified cybersecurity as the field where AI threats are most likely to materialize first. Charles Guillemet, CTO of hardware wallet company Ledger, pointed out that AI tools significantly lower the cost and barrier to entry for exploiting software vulnerabilities. He warned that tasks that once took months could now be completed in seconds. Altman emphasized that while AI can bring positive innovations like drug discovery, it can also facilitate sophisticated cyberattacks and harmful biological research. He added that the possibility of terrorist organizations using AI to develop new pathogens is no longer hypothetical, and a large-scale cyberattack could occur this year, necessitating extensive preemptive action.
