New Yorkers' Religious Knowledge Tested Ahead of Easter, Showing Confusion on Meaning of Holiday
Confusion Over Easter's Meaning and Jesus' Death
Fox News conducted street interviews in New York leading up to Easter, aiming to gauge residents' religious knowledge. The interviewer posed questions about the significance of Easter and the events surrounding Jesus' death and resurrection. Many respondents were unaware that Easter falls on a Sunday, with some mistakenly identifying it as Martin Luther King Day or Jesus' birthday. When asked about Jesus' death, various incorrect answers were given, such as 'stoned to death' or 'burned.' One respondent offered the ambiguous answer that it was 'the day Jesus gave himself up.' Only a minority correctly identified it as 'the day Jesus resurrected.'
The Meaning of Good Friday and Perceptions of Sin
Questions about why 'Good Friday' is called 'Good Friday' also stumped most respondents. Even a woman who attended Catholic school could not recall the reason. When asked why Jesus was crucified, speculative answers included 'people didn't support him,' while others suggested 'the devil killed him' or 'the Romans killed him.' Following the statement that 'Jesus died for our sins,' the interviewer asked if respondents considered themselves sinners. Their confessed 'sins' included 'smoking weed,' 'punching walls,' and 'premarital sex.' Towards the end of the interview, when asked what they would say to Jesus if he were alive today, respondents expressed a desire to speak with Jesus directly.
