The Meaning and Importance of Public Holidays

Students in Hong Kong define public holidays as 'days when everyone can rest,' citing examples like Lunar New Year, Ching Ming Festival, and National Day. They explained that public holidays offer opportunities to spend time with family, relax with friends, and enjoy leisure activities. These days are seen as precious time off from school or work for both children and adults.

Professions Working on Public Holidays

Despite public holidays, many essential professions continue to work to maintain society. Students mentioned food service workers, police officers, firefighters, medical staff, and convenience store employees as examples. They explained that these individuals contribute to society by working 24/7 to ensure public safety and convenience.

If There Were an Extra Public Holiday?

When asked about their preferred timing for an additional public holiday, students offered various opinions. One student chose the day before exams, wishing for more time to study and prepare. Another student opted for a holiday after exams to relax and de-stress. Yet another student hoped for an extra holiday on a Friday to create a three-day long weekend, stating they would gladly accept slightly more homework for it.
