Kerala Elections: UDF Confident of 'Comfortable Majority,' Criticizes LDF-BJP Deal
UDF Predicts Landslide Victory, Slams LDF
KC Venugopal, MP from Alappuzha, Kerala, expressed strong confidence that the United Democratic Front (UDF) will achieve a comfortable majority in the upcoming general elections. He stated that the people of Kerala are 'fed up' with ten years of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule, and even Communist workers are demanding change. Venugopal specifically criticized the LDF for claiming credit for major projects that were initiated by the UDF. He highlighted the Vizhinjam project in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi Metro, Nedumbassery Airport, and national highway constructions as projects conceived and started by the UDF government. He emphasized that government is a continuous process, and taking credit for previous administrations' achievements is unfair.
Allegations of BJP-LDF 'Deal'
Venugopal accused the LDF and BJP of having a mutual understanding or 'deal.' He suggested that the BJP has 'diluted' its candidates in certain constituencies, implying a clear design by the BJP and Sangh Parivar to target Christians. He also criticized the BJP for recent FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) changes, which he views as an attack on Christian organizations. Venugopal stated that the UDF vehemently opposed this legislation, leading to its temporary withdrawal by the government. He contended that the actions of the LDF and BJP are misleading the people of Kerala, and even Lord Ayyappa is 'not safe' under the LDF government, reflecting Hindu sentiments. He affirmed the UDF's commitment to fighting for justice.
Women's Reservation and Future Chief Minister
Venugopal also critiqued the government's handling of the women's reservation bill. He noted that despite being a long-standing initiative of the UDF, the government bulldozed the bill through the house without proper parliamentary conventions and procedures. He pointed out that the government called a special session but refused to hold an all-party meeting to discuss the features and hidden agenda behind the bill. When asked about potentially becoming the next Chief Minister, Venugopal humbly described himself as an 'ordinary Congress Karyakarta (worker)' of the state, stating that the Chief Minister would be decided immediately after the election results.
