AI-Driven Restructuring Accelerates, Threatening Youth 'Skill Ladder'
AI Accelerates Layoffs, Replaces Entry-Level Tasks
A software developer with three years of experience, recently transferred to a major IT company, noted the growing importance of AI utilization and its impact on performance evaluations. His company's new hires significantly dropped from 600 in 2022 to 259 in 2024. According to the Software Policy Research Institute, the proportion of junior developers with less than three years of experience decreased from 26.9% in 2022 to 20.7% in 2024. Since the launch of ChatGPT, generative AI has been identified as a key factor in reducing new hires, with job insecurity becoming evident among vulnerable segments of the labor market.
Youth Job Insecurity Deepens, 'Skill Ladder' Collapses
A report by the Korea Labor Institute indicates that 58% of office and administrative workers fear job loss due to AI within the next decade, with higher anxiety among junior employees and those in their twenties. AI is replacing 30.2% of 'core training areas' such as drafting reports, summarizing, and research, which were traditionally performed by new hires. This trend is analyzed as collapsing the 'skill development ladder.' A human resources team leader at a major conglomerate confirmed that AI is reducing tasks for junior employees, leading to increased demand for experienced staff over new recruits. Analysis by the Bank of Korea shows that youth employment decreased by 211,000 jobs over the past three years, with 208,000 of these losses occurring in AI-exposed sectors.
