Lab-Grown 'Dinosaur Leather' Handbag Unveiled
A one-of-a-kind handbag crafted from collagen derived from Tyrannosaurus rex fossils has been unveiled in Amsterdam. This creation aims to showcase the future of sustainable leather. The teal-colored bag is dramatically displayed inside a cage beneath a life-sized T. Rex replica at the Amsterdam Zoo. Visitors can view the bag until May 11, after which it will go up for auction with a starting price of over half a million dollars. The team behind the bag states they used ancient protein fragments from dinosaur fossils, blending them into lab-grown cells to create collagen, which was then turned into leather.
Scientists Question 'T. Rex Leather' Authenticity
However, not everyone is convinced by the claims. Some scientists argue that calling it 'T. Rex leather' might be a stretch. Experts point out that additional material from modern animals would still be needed in the process. Others add that even if dinosaur collagen is present, it comes from inside the bone, not the skin. Without the natural structure that gives leather its strength and texture, recreating true dinosaur leather may not be genuinely possible.
