Israel Blocks Access to Old City of Jerusalem, Forcing Prayers Outside Al-Aqsa Mosque
Outdoor Prayers Near Al-Aqsa Mosque
On April 3, 2026, a significant number of Muslim worshippers performed Friday prayers on the pavement near the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. This comes as Israel continues to ban them from entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex for prayers. Israel cites "security" measures related to its joint war with the US against Iran as the reason for these restrictions, forcing worshippers to pray in the streets.
Blockade of Old City and Holy Sites
Israel has blocked all access to the Old City of Jerusalem and its holy sites since February 28, 2026. This closure has drawn widespread condemnation from several Muslim countries, particularly as it occurred during the holy month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, when tens of thousands of worshippers normally gather to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites.
