Mozambique Repays IMF Debt Early, Paving Way for New Funding
Full Repayment of IMF Debt and Economic Implications
Mozambique has fully repaid its debt of over $630 million to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) ahead of schedule. As of early March, Mozambique still owed $515 million in Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to the IMF, but by the end of the month, this figure had dropped to zero. This makes Mozambique one of the only countries among dozens to fully settle its IMF credit during that period. This early repayment could strengthen the government's position as it seeks to secure new financial support.
Mozambique's Economic Landscape and Poverty Challenges
Mozambique has a low-income, developing economy that relies heavily on agriculture, natural resources, and foreign investment. Around 60% to 65% of the population lives below the national poverty line, with higher rates observed in rural areas. The economy remains fragile, and the repayment of the IMF debt is expected to enhance the country's credibility and potentially attract further investment.
