Shibuya to Fine Litterbugs on Spot from June Amid Visitor Surge
Shibuya Alters Litter Policy Amid Surging Visitor Numbers
Shibuya Ward in Tokyo, known for its iconic scramble crossing and bustling districts, is set to change its long-standing policy on littering. Abandoning its previous approach of encouraging people to take their rubbish home, the ward is now turning to on-the-spot fines. This shift comes as visitor numbers continue to surge, leading to an increasing accumulation of litter throughout the area.
On-the-Spot Fines of 2,000 Yen to Be Implemented
Under a new campaign titled 'If you throw trash, you lose cash,' anyone caught littering will face a fine of 2,000 yen (approximately US$12.50). This enforcement is scheduled to begin on June 1, following a grace period. The measure aims to address the growing environmental concerns and maintain cleanliness in Shibuya, a major draw for both domestic and international tourists.
