Emir of Qatar's Visit to UAE

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to hold talks with President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan. The discussions covered a wide range of issues, including the Iran war, regional security, and economic developments. This visit occurred a day after the Emir met with the Saudi Crown Prince and the King of Jordan at a trilateral summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Qatar's foreign ministry has stated its readiness to assist in any future negotiations aimed at ending the war in Iran.

GCC's Security Challenges

The visit takes place amidst what is perhaps the biggest security challenge the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has faced since its foundation in 1981. Nearly 6,000 projectiles have been fired from Iran towards GCC countries, posing a significant threat to the region's economic stability. While GCC countries generally prefer diplomatic solutions, some explicitly discuss the right to self-defense and the possibility of retaliation. Qatar aims to bridge the gaps in these differing approaches among GCC members, provide a platform for the integration of security policies, secure energy flow, and create a unified position for a collective response. Furthermore, it seeks to ensure that GCC interests are properly reflected in future negotiations for any peace settlement.

Iranian Missile Attack Status

According to the UAE's Ministry of Defense, on Tuesday, UAE air defenses intercepted eight ballistic missiles, four cruise missiles, and 36 drones launched from Iran. Since the start of the war, the UAE has intercepted a total of 433 ballistic missiles, 19 cruise missiles, and 1,977 drones. Debris from these interceptions has injured six Asian nationals. Saudi Arabia's Defence Ministry reported intercepting two drones in the past hours, with debris causing damage to six houses and several cars, but no injuries. Notably, the eastern province of Saudi Arabia, where 70% of Saudi energy and major energy infrastructure are located, has been a primary target for Iranian drone attacks.
