US Largest Public Hospital CEO: Ready to Replace Radiologists with AI
NYC Health + Hospitals CEO on AI Adoption
Mitchell H. Katz, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals, recently declared during a panel discussion that he is prepared to begin replacing radiologists with artificial intelligence (AI) under certain circumstances, once the regulatory landscape allows. He highlighted the increasing use of AI in interpreting mammograms and X-rays, viewing it as an opportunity for hospitals to reduce spending on radiologists, whose costs have risen amidst growing demand for imaging services.
Potential Benefits and Regulatory Challenges of AI
Katz emphasized AI's significant potential to enhance access to breast cancer screening. He suggested that hospitals could achieve major savings by allowing AI to handle initial readings, with radiologists then double-checking any abnormal findings. David Lubarsky, CEO of Westchester Medical Center Health Network, echoed this sentiment, stating their system has already seen great success with AI, noting its ability to detect breast cancers with accuracy better than human beings. However, Katz pointed out the need for regulatory changes in New York state to permit AI to read images "without a radiologist," presenting a key challenge.
