US Gas Prices Exceed $4 a Gallon Amid Middle East Conflict
Soaring Gas Prices Add to Household Burden
The average retail price of gasoline in the U.S. has exceeded $4 a gallon, marking the first time in over three years, according to data from price tracking service GasBuddy. This surge is attributed to the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran, which has created turmoil in global energy markets. Since the conflict began in late February, gas prices have jumped by 36%, placing an increasing financial strain on American households. A Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that 55% of respondents stated the increase in gas prices had taken a toll on their household finances.
Fuel Prices Become a Political Headache
Drivers in New York City are particularly feeling the pinch, with some gas stations charging over $5 per gallon. The rising fuel costs have also become a political liability for President Donald Trump and his Republican Party ahead of the November midterm elections. Republicans are campaigning to retain their slim majorities in Congress. Trump had pledged to lower energy prices and ramp up U.S. oil and gas production. However, much of his second term has been marked by volatile markets, geopolitical turmoil, and shifting policies on issues such as tariffs.
