US Allegedly Used Untested Weapon in Iran School Strike
Allegations of Untested Missile Use
The New York Times (NYT) reported that on February 28, the United States allegedly used a ballistic missile, previously untested in combat, to strike a school and sports hall in Lamerd, southern Iran. According to NYT's analysis and weapons experts, the damage from the strike is consistent with the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), which explodes above its targets, dispersing small tungsten pellets. The Pentagon stated that this weapon completed its prototype phase only last year.
Civilian Facilities Attacked and Casualties
The NYT noted that the targeted school and sports hall in Lamerd were located directly next to an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facility. These facilities had been walled off from the IRGC site for at least 15 years and were listed as civilian facilities on popular online mapping services. Iranian officials reported at least 21 people were killed in the Lamerd attack. On the same day, an American missile destroyed a girls' elementary school in Minab, killing 175 people, mostly students. US President Donald Trump has refused to admit responsibility for the Minab attack, but the Pentagon has opened an investigation into the incident.
