Pakistan's Mediation Efforts and Dialogue Channels

Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, Pakistan's Ambassador to the U.S., stated in an interview with Fox News that Pakistan is playing a mediating role to de-escalate tensions between the United States and Iran. He noted that both countries have shown confidence in Pakistan, and Islamabad will continue its diplomatic efforts for regional peace, akin to its past role in fostering rapprochement between China and the U.S. The Pakistani Prime Minister and Foreign Minister are engaged in phone calls with global leaders to create a conducive environment for dialogue.

Signs of De-escalation and Trump's Warnings

Ambassador Sheikh viewed Iran's decision to allow 20 ships through the Strait of Hormuz as a positive confidence-building measure, which could serve as a prerequisite for diplomatic talks. However, Donald Trump, the U.S. President, had previously warned on social media that if a deal is not reached and the Strait of Hormuz is not immediately 'Open for Business,' he would 'blow up' all of Iran's electric generating plants, oil wells, and Kharg Island. In response, Sheikh emphasized that diplomacy is a gradual process requiring patient politics.

Border Tensions with Afghanistan and Terrorism Concerns

Sheikh also addressed the issue of terrorist attacks along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. He stated that Pakistan is one of the biggest victims of terrorism, with cross-border attacks continuing even after the new government took charge in Afghanistan. Pakistan has repeatedly shared the locations of these attacks with Afghan authorities, who have claimed to be unable to take action. He reiterated that while dialogue and diplomacy are crucial, Pakistan was compelled to act to protect its citizens and could not simply wait for the next terrorist incident. He stressed that this situation is distinctly different, as extensive diplomatic efforts have been made over four years to address the issue.
