Migrant Boat Tragedy Off Tunisia's Coast
At least 19 migrants have died and approximately 20 individuals remain missing after a migrant boat sank off the coast of Sfax, Tunisia. According to the monitoring group Alarm Phone, about 60 people had departed from Sfax, but only 16 survivors have been confirmed so far, with 19 bodies recovered. Adverse weather conditions are believed to have contributed to the sinking of the vessel.
Continued Migrant Disasters in the Mediterranean
This incident marks the latest in a series of migrant boat disasters in recent days. Previously, 22 migrants died near the Greek island of Crete after a boat carrying 48 people sank. That vessel had departed from the Libyan coast of Tobruk in an attempt to reach the Italian coast. The European Border and Coast Guard Agency reports a continuous flow of irregular migration attempts across the Mediterranean, often resulting in significant loss of life.
