Iran War Long-Term Benefits for China's Security and Economy
China Poised to Benefit from Prolonged Iran War
As the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran shows increasing signs of escalating into a ground conflict and potentially prolonged, analyses suggest that China could emerge as an unexpected beneficiary. While initial predictions largely anticipated significant economic setbacks for China due to its reliance on cheap Iranian oil, current assessments indicate that a drawn-out conflict could, paradoxically, yield security and economic benefits for Beijing. The Financial Times (FT) reported on the 29th (local time) that the "Iran war will strengthen China's superpower status," projecting that China will leverage this conflict to its advantage in the great power competition.
US Middle East Re-engagement Expands China's Strategic Space
A primary driver for these predictions lies in the security implications. Despite the US declaring its "Pivot to Asia" in 2011, shifting its diplomatic and military focus from the Middle East to the Asia-Pacific region, it appears to be drawn back into Middle Eastern affairs. Should the conflict extend, with some US security assets in East Asia being redirected to the Middle East, China's strategic maneuvering space in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea could expand. Professor In Nam-sik of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy noted that the reallocation of US strategic assets would be favorable for China's security strategy. Bloomberg also pointed out that while China is not currently escalating tensions with Taiwan, Taiwan feels uneasy, as the time it would take for the US to replenish its missile stockpiles could severely impact its defense capabilities for Taiwan.
