Hong Kong's Home Affairs Secretary Emphasizes Resident Rights in Redevelopment Plan
Redevelopment Plan and Safeguarding Resident Rights
The Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs emphasized the government's commitment to protecting residents' rights amidst the ongoing large-scale redevelopment plan. She clarified that even if property owners sell their homes to the government as part of the plan, their rights associated with the plan will remain preserved for the original owners. She also noted that the Housing Authority is aware of these arrangements and is currently reviewing the financial aspects. This indicates the government's proactive approach to ensure residents are not disadvantaged during the redevelopment process.
Review of Financial and Contractual Documents
A primary task for the Housing Authority involves scrutinizing over 800,000 documents transferred from the previous management company. The aim is to identify each household's contributions to the communal fund, particularly for the fifth and sixth phases, to facilitate a refund scheme. Furthermore, lawyers are assisting in reviewing contracts signed by the statutory body and assessing any potential legal liabilities. Once this document review is complete, public sessions will be organized to transparently explain the situation and refund procedures to residents.
Resident Engagement and Legislative Council Session Coordination
As previously stated last week, the Secretary reaffirmed that the Housing Authority will schedule its explanatory sessions to avoid clashes with Legislative Council meetings, allowing residents ample opportunity to attend and ask questions without conflict. This scheduling consideration aims to ensure residents have sufficient time to understand the information and address concerns. The government is committed to actively listening to residents' feedback and facilitating transparent communication throughout the redevelopment process.
