US Bolsters Troops in Middle East Amid Concerns Over Prolonged Iran War
Prolonged Iran War and Troop Buildup
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, is continuing diplomatic efforts through Pakistani officials to de-escalate the month-long war with Iran, even as a military buildup in the Middle East proceeds. Vera Bergengruen of the Wall Street Journal reported that Secretary of State Rubio privately told his G7 counterparts that the war should conclude within 2 to 4 weeks and "is not going to be a prolonged conflict." However, The Washington Post indicates that the Pentagon is preparing for weeks of ground operations in Iran, which could mark a significantly more dangerous phase for U.S. troops than the first four weeks.
Potential for Ground Troops and Associated Concerns
Secretary Rubio stated that the U.S. can achieve its objectives in Iran, such as destroying missile, rocket, and drone factories, as well as its Navy and Air Force, and significantly reducing missile launchers, without any ground troops. Yet, Retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General David Deptula noted that there are no guarantees in war, and there might be situations where ground troop deployment becomes unavoidable. Specifically, securing Kharg Island or certain parts of the Iranian coastline could be objectives requiring ground forces. General Deptula emphasized that while ground forces are not the preferred option due to the risk of high casualties, they might be necessary if diplomatic efforts stall and maritime pressure in the Persian Gulf persists.
