Northern Territory Ambulance Service Reaches 'Critical Failure Point'

The Northern Territory's ambulance service in Australia reached a 'critical failure point' this weekend, facing severe operational challenges. St John Ambulance received 144 calls for help in just seven hours, with over 60 calls abandoned and 14 life-threatening cases left waiting. One patient, in particular, waited for over five hours. On-duty manager Samantha Cooper stated that this situation was not surprising and will continue unless the current system is reformed.

Staff Exhaustion and Lack of Additional Resources

Samantha Cooper highlighted that exhausted crews, having already worked 12-hour shifts, were asked to stay back, putting both patients and staff at risk. She noted that crews were forced to forgo meal and fatigue breaks, effectively giving up their basic human rights. While Health Minister Steve Edgington claimed that additional resources and support staff had been provided, the ambulance service asserts it has not received any extra resources for many years and has not seen any change. The Territory's older population expressed particular concern over the state of the service, questioning what kind of country they live in if timely ambulance services cannot be guaranteed, potentially leading to preventable loss of life.
