Nobel Laureate Warns of Declining U.S. Scientific Leadership
The Natural Element of Scientific and Economic Progress
CMG Host Wang Guan noted that the fundamental principles of science and economics naturally bring together elements, talents, goods, and ideas. Nobel laureate in economic sciences Thomas Sargent responded by stating that this force cannot be broken and that history offers many lessons about good and bad events. He emphasized that there are crucial things to remember from history.
Past and Present of U.S. Scientific Leadership
Professor Sargent explained that American science has led the world for the past 70 or 80 years because the United States imported scientists from Europe during World War II, who were driven out by the Nazis. He noted that scientists from Austria and Germany in fields such as physics, chemistry, and economics migrated to the U.S., leading to the growth of American universities. However, he warned that the current policy environment in the United States is causing many foreign-born scientists to want to leave. Professor Sargent considers this a profound neglect of a huge lesson in history.
