Greenpeace Philippines Calls for Alternative Transportation and Policy Changes Amid Environmental and Economic Crises
Dual Challenge of Environmental Impact and Soaring Fuel Prices
Jefferson Chua, Campaigner for Greenpeace Philippines, highlighted the severe environmental impact of fossil fuels, emphasizing the economic burden faced by Filipinos due to rising fuel costs. Chua expressed concern over the continued use of dirtier fuel sources like Euro 2, despite cleaner Euro 4 options being available, underscoring the urgent need for a shift towards more sustainable practices.
Advocating for Alternatives and Government Intervention
Chua urged the Philippine government to prioritize the cost-of-living crisis over mere fuel supply issues. He advocated for a return to basics, encouraging active and public transportation such as cycling and mass transit, and promoting policies like four-day work weeks and work-from-home arrangements to reduce reliance on private vehicles. Furthermore, Chua suggested that the government repeal the Oil Deregulation Law and impose a windfall profits tax on large corporations to alleviate the economic strain on ordinary citizens, stressing the importance of fair and equitable access to essential resources.
