Malaysian PM Emphasizes 'Genuine Intent' in Iran Negotiations
Emphasis on Genuine Intent in Iran Negotiations
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim asserted that negotiations with Iran must focus on ending the conflict. Speaking on March 25, 2026, he emphasized that talks should proceed on the basis of 'genuine intent' and not be used as a temporary pause or for tactical advantage. Prime Minister Anwar noted that the international community has witnessed too many ceasefires functioning as pauses rather than conclusions, underscoring the need for a more durable peace in the region.
Reaffirming Iran's Sovereignty and Urging Regional Restraint
Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed Iran's right to defend its sovereignty, as recognized under international law. This stance was articulated particularly in the face of continued Israeli strikes in Iran and Lebanon. Concurrently, he called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint. He stressed the importance of ensuring that civilian populations and the infrastructure of neighboring states, particularly the Gulf states, are not drawn further into a conflict they did not choose. Anwar Ibrahim warned that the Gulf states, the region, and the world have much at stake economically, socially, and in terms of long-term stability, and their peoples must not bear the consequences of decisions taken elsewhere.
