US Government Shutdown Lingers: TSA Officers Unpaid, Congressional Negotiations Stalled
Prolonged Shutdown Deepens Hardship for TSA Officers
The partial US government shutdown has stretched to 40 days, causing severe financial strain for Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Many employees have maxed out credit cards and taken out loans to cover living expenses, with some noting they were just recovering from the last shutdown when this one hit. Major airports like Houston are experiencing record numbers of TSA call-outs, leading to long security lines and operational disruptions.
DHS Budget Negotiations at a Stalemate
Senate Republicans have proposed funding all DHS agencies except Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with plans to address ICE funding later. Senator John Thune stated this proposal is essentially what Democrats have been asking for. However, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer views the GOP proposal as insufficient, demanding reforms to ICE and withholding votes to fully fund DHS. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with any deal that does not include his voter ID legislation.
Congressional Recess Looms Amid Unresolved Pay Issues
With lawmakers set to leave for a two-week recess on Friday, tens of thousands of DHS employees, including TSA officers, are expected to miss yet another paycheck. Senator Tim Kaine acknowledged the unfairness that ICE agents are paid (having been pre-funded for about seven years of their budget) while TSA agents working alongside them are not. The impending recess further complicates efforts to resolve the budget impasse, raising concerns about the continued duration of the government shutdown.
