Seibu Shibuya Store to Close End of September Due to Redevelopment Dispute
Seibu Shibuya Store Announces September Closure
Major department store operator Sogo & Seibu announced on March 25 that its Seibu Shibuya Store, which has been in operation for nearly 60 years, will close at the end of September. The company stated that the closure is due to a failure to reach an agreement in contract negotiations with landowners who are seeking the surrender of the property as part of a surrounding redevelopment project.
Redevelopment Negotiations Fail
The Seibu Shibuya Store has been a prominent commercial facility in the Shibuya area for decades. However, the ongoing urban redevelopment in the vicinity led to irreconcilable differences in contract renewal and land use with the landowners, ultimately resulting in the decision to close. This closure is expected to significantly impact the Shibuya commercial district.
