Iran Turns Back Pakistan-Bound Ship From Hormuz Strait Over Transit Permit
Pakistan-Bound Vessel 'Selen' Turned Back
Iran announced it had turned back a Pakistan-bound vessel, the 'Selen,' from the Strait of Hormuz on May 20. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the container ship, sailing from Sharjah in the UAE towards Karachi, lacked the necessary transit authorization and failed to comply with legal protocols. The IRGC emphasized that passage through the waterway would now require full coordination with Iran's maritime authority.
Strait Navigation Protocols and Indian Tankers
Iran has asserted its management over the open navigation of the Strait of Hormuz, indicating that vessels associated with countries Iran considers 'enemies' will not be permitted passage. Since the conflict began on February 28, the number of ships crossing the Strait has drastically reduced. From March 1 to 24, commodity carriers made only 149 crossings, a 95% decrease from peacetime. Of these, 94 were oil and gas tankers, with 61% loaded and more than two-thirds traveling east out of the Strait. Two Indian-flagged LPG tankers, the Jagvasant and Pine Gas, successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz on March 25 and are expected to reach Indian ports by late March. Two other Indian LPG tankers had also transited earlier.
