Trump Claims Deal to Open Strait of Hormuz, Iran Calls it 'Fake News'
Trump's Assertions on Iran Talks
US President Donald Trump reported what he described as "very positive and productive conversations" with Iran. He suggested that Iran could give up its nuclear weapons plans and claimed these talks led to 15 points of agreement. Among these points, Trump stated that the United States would enter Iran to collect its enriched uranium and that the Strait of Hormuz would open very soon, to be jointly controlled by Iran and the United States. He added that the talks were progressing so well that he had postponed proposed US strikes on Iran's energy facilities by five days.
Iran's Rebuttal and Market Reaction
Iranian officials denied that any direct talks took place, with the speaker of Iran's parliament calling Trump's comments "fake news." They accused the US president of attempting to manipulate financial markets and oil prices, and of trying to escape a "quagmire" in which the US and Israel are trapped. Despite Iran's denials, financial markets reacted to Trump's statements, with the Dow and S&P indices rising and oil prices dipping considerably.
