Peru Elections: 57% Undecided Voters Amid Political Instability
Peru's Electoral Predicament: Numerous Candidates, Undecided Electorate
Peru is just three weeks away from its general elections on April 12, yet a significant 57% of voters remain undecided on who to support. The presence of 35 presidential candidates has only added to the confusion among the electorate. Peruvians are grappling with the challenge of selecting competent and corruption-free leaders who can steer the country back on track. A series of candidate debates, extending into next week, are expected to play a crucial role in shaping voter decisions.
Surging Crime and Political Instability Undermine Leadership Trust
The issues of crime and corruption have severely impacted Peru. Transport workers, like Jose Quispe, have become primary targets of extortion and contract killings. The government has even resorted to ordering police escorts for some vehicles to ensure safety. Last year, the expansion of extortions and contract killings led to over 2,200 homicides, affecting all sectors of the economy.
Peru has experienced extreme political instability, with eight heads of state in the last decade, most of whom were removed on corruption charges. This has rendered the presidency one of the weakest institutions within the government. 40% of voters intend to vote for a president, legislators, and senators from the same party to ensure the new leader has sufficient support in Congress and avoids a rapid impeachment process.
