Foreign Minister Motegi Discusses Japan-US Summit and Iran Diplomacy
Positive Atmosphere at Japan-US Summit
Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu described the recent summit between Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and President Donald Trump as having an extremely good atmosphere, reflecting the strong relationship of trust between the two leaders. On the economic front, he stated that cooperative projects are progressing based on last year's Japan-US agreement. Discussions also focused on strengthening and further coordinating supply chains, including for critical minerals and energy.
Japan's Stance on the Iran Situation
Motegi noted that President Trump used the phrase 'step up' regarding the Iran situation, indicating a desire for various countries, including Japan, to take action. However, he clarified that there were no concrete requests. Prime Minister Takaichi responded by explaining in detail what Japan can and cannot do under its laws. Motegi stated that the current situation does not present an existential crisis for Japan, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts to restore calm. He added that the Japanese government is working to address soaring crude oil prices and ensure a stable energy supply.
Safe Passage in the Persian Gulf and Message to Iran
Motegi mentioned discussions with the Iranian Foreign Minister, where he highlighted that many vessels, not just Japanese ones, are in the Persian Gulf, and ensuring their safe passage is crucial. He also strongly communicated that Iran should cease attacks on its neighbors, as such actions only lead to further isolation. Japan maintains long-standing relationships with both Israel and Iran, allowing it to speak frankly with both sides. Motegi affirmed that Japan will continue to play its role in the international community by conveying what needs to be said.
