China's Balancing Act Amidst US-Russia Tensions

Chinese President Xi Jinping is preparing to host Russian President Vladimir Putin just days after welcoming US President Donald Trump to Beijing. This move reflects China's complex diplomatic strategy: seeking to stabilize ties with the United States amidst tensions over trade, tech restrictions, and Taiwan, while simultaneously strengthening its close relationship with Russia. The two leaders have met more than 40 times, and both governments describe bilateral ties as being at their 'highest point in history'.

Strengthening Energy Security and Strategic Partnership

For Beijing, Putin's visit is crucial for several key interests. Firstly, energy security. Russia has become one of China's biggest suppliers of discounted oil and gas, much of it traded in Chinese yuan or Russian rubles. With conflicts in the Middle East and concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, this relationship is even more valuable. Secondly, China seeks a stable strategic partner against the US. Xi Jinping does not want to see Russia lose the war or Putin lose power. However, China's closeness with Moscow has also damaged relations with Europe. European governments accuse China of helping Russia sustain its economy through trade and dual-use technology exports. China does not want to lose access to European markets at a time when its own economy is slowing.
