Belgium Deploys Military to Protect Jewish Sites
Belgian Military Deployment and Background
Belgium has deployed military forces to protect Jewish sites in major cities across the country, as announced by Defense Minister Theo Francken. Belgian authorities stated last week that the armed forces would assist police in guarding Jewish places of worship and educational institutions in Brussels, Antwerp, and Liege. This decision follows a bomb attack on a synagogue in Liege in early March and similar incidents in the neighboring Netherlands after the launch of the US-Israeli war against Iran.
Jewish Community Concerns and Government Response
Minister Francken confirmed the mission's commencement by posting a photo of troops in Antwerp, stating, "The city is a little safer again... the Jewish community too. We say NO to antisemitism." Yves Oschinsky, president of the Coordinating Committee of Belgian Jewish Organizations, told Reuters that the country’s Jewish community has been increasingly concerned about its security since the March 9 explosion at a synagogue in Liege. Oschinsky emphasized the need for protection for children, schools, and youth movements, expressing a sense of reassurance from the troop deployment.
