Iran Fires Ballistic Missiles at US Base in Diego Garcia, Strikes Near Israeli Nuclear Facility
Escalating Tensions: Iran Targets US Base and Israeli Nuclear Site
Iran reportedly fired two ballistic missiles at a joint US-UK military base on Diego Garcia, more than 2,000 miles from Tehran. Additionally, a missile struck a residential neighborhood in the southern Israeli city of Dimona, resulting in dozens of injuries. This area, home to Israel's nuclear research center, is believed to have been targeted in retaliation for Israeli air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported no damage to the center but called for restraint from both sides. Iran claims these attacks were in response to US and Israeli airstrikes against its nuclear facilities, including the Natanz nuclear enrichment site.
US Reinforces Troops, Speculation of Ground Operations
The Pentagon released video of strikes destroying Iranian military vehicles and aircraft, stating that Iran has lost significant combat capability over the past three weeks. However, Iran continues to launch dozens of missiles and drones daily, maintaining its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz. The US is now sending an additional 2,200 Marines to the Gulf, escalating its military presence. This deployment fuels speculation that the US might use ground troops to reopen the Strait or even seize Iran's Kharg Island. The Pentagon reports that at least 13 Americans have been killed and 232 wounded in the conflict.
Honoring Fallen US Service Members
Meanwhile, in Iowa, US Army Reservists Major Jeffrey O'Brien and Sergeant Declan Cody were honored at their funeral services. They were killed in an attack on an American base in Kuwait at the start of the war. These casualties highlight the human cost of the escalating military tensions in the Middle East, moving beyond mere skirmishes to significant losses of life.
