Iran Launches Intermediate-Range Missiles at US-UK Base; War Escalates to Fourth Week
Iran Escalates Conflict with Intermediate-Range Missile Launch
The war between the United States-Israel and Iran has entered its fourth week, with Iran's retaliation intensifying. On March 21 (local time), Iran launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs) with a range of 4,000 km towards the US-UK joint military base in Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. This marks Iran's first operational use of an IRBM in the war. The base, located in the Chagos Archipelago, is a strategic stronghold capable of operating B-2 stealth bombers. One of the launched missiles reportedly failed in flight, while the other was intercepted by a US Navy vessel's air defense system.
Strikes on Israeli Nuclear Facilities and Trump's Warning
Iran also fired missiles at Dimona and Arad, where Israel's nuclear facilities are located, causing casualties. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump warned Iran that he would "incinerate" Iran's power plants if it did not lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, further escalating tensions. Iran had previously limited its ballistic missile range to approximately 2,000 km, but this attack confirmed its use of weapons beyond that range.
