HSBC Asks Hong Kong Card Theft Victim to Pay HK$126,580
A Hong Kong woman whose credit card was stolen has been asked by HSBC to pay the HK$126,580 racked up by thieves, as she allegedly failed to report the loss immediately. This has sparked controversy as a friend with a similar incident had fraudulent charges waived.
Victim Demanded to Pay Stolen Credit Card Charges
A Hong Kong mother has been asked to pay over HK$126,000 (US$16,100) in charges incurred by thieves who stole her credit card last November. HSBC stated that Janice Choi, 42, failed to report the loss immediately, leading to the demand for payment. Choi told the South China Morning Post that she was notified of the charges in February.
Allegations of Double Standards Against Bank
Janice Choi has accused the bank of double standards. She highlighted that a friend, whose credit card was also stolen on the same day, reported the case to HSBC the next day and had the fraudulent charges waived. This discrepancy in treatment has raised questions regarding the bank's policies and their application to different customers.
