Chinese Chicken Feet Factory Exposed for Unsanitary Conditions and Hydrogen Peroxide Bleaching
Unsanitary Chicken Feet Processing Exposed
China's CCTV investigative program '3·15 WanHui' revealed shocking production conditions at a chicken feet processing factory in Chengdu, Sichuan province. The company's products were popular online, offline, and in snack shops. However, the factory floor was reportedly covered in stagnant sewage and foul odors, with chicken feet piled directly on the floor. Work was observed proceeding in unsanitary conditions, with cleaning tools like brooms and shovels placed on top of chicken feet. Workers were also seen picking up dropped chicken feet from the floor and putting them back into processing containers.
Prohibited Hydrogen Peroxide Use Discovered
The report indicated that the factory used hydrogen peroxide to bleach chicken feet, making them appear whiter during processing. Hydrogen peroxide, a strong oxidizer and disinfectant, is prohibited for food processing in China due to its potential to cause oral mucosal damage and liver/kidney dysfunction. Chinese authorities have seized hundreds of boxes of the implicated products and stated they are investigating the use of hydrogen peroxide and other violations.
