Since 2023, posts about doctors facing pay cuts have emerged on Chinese social media, with 58% of medical staff reporting a drop in pay in 2024. Professionals like former pediatrician Yang Haotian have abandoned demanding careers to become content creators or delivery drivers. This shift is also linked to major policy initiatives such as the Covid-19 pandemic, the "three red lines" for the property sector, and the "double reduction" campaign in education. These measures have made it difficult for many to continue in their previous jobs, pushing them towards the gig economy.
Challenges for Gig Workers and the Role of Government
A 2025 report on ride-hailing drivers revealed that 77% entered the industry because they could not find other work, and 63% are the sole breadwinners for their households. Experts note that society still holds negative perceptions of gig workers, and long-term developmental issues like social security remain unaddressed. For delivery riders, medical insurance and coverage for workplace injuries are significant concerns, with 12,000 traffic accidents involving riders recorded in 2023. Many delivery platforms link rider pay to delivery speed, forcing workers to prioritize efficiency over safety. Experts advocate for stronger government oversight of platforms through algorithmic audits and antitrust legislation to ensure fairer rewards.
